Jordi Cruyff officially confirmed as Barcelona sporting director

Jordi Cruyff has been officially handed the title of Barcelona’s sporting director, having carried out the duties of the role since July.

Cruyff, who like his father played for the club in the past, returned last year to serve as a director, and has remained there ever since.

In that time, he has seen his responsibilities grow, playing a big part in the many transfers that the Spanish side have made and helping bring a number of players to Camp Nou.

He was given the unofficial role of sporting director earlier this summer, working alongside Mateu Alemany to orchestrate the club’s impressive summer business, all while technically not being part of the recruitment team.

Now, Barcelona have officially handed Cruyff the title of sporting director – a decision manager Xavi was happy to hear.

Scott SaundersGraeme Bailey and Toby Cudworth bring you a brand new episode of Talking Transfers. The team discuss the fallout from the summer transfer window, Chelsea’s midfield issues, Antony’s suitability at Man Utd and more. Available on all audio platforms and the 90min YouTube channel.

“I am happy for him and for us because he is a very capable person, he knows a lot about football, he is very loyal to me personally but also to the entire staff,” said the manager.

“It’s a great decision by the club, totally right. Both Mateu and Jordi are fantastic for the position. I am very happy.”

In his role, he will continue to work alongside director of football Alemany, with the two taking the lead in all transfer negotiations concerning the club, both incoming and outgoing.

It will likely be a busy winter transfer window for them with the futures of Frenkie de Jong, Jordi Alba and Memphis Depay among others unclear going forward.

In terms of bringing players to the club, 90min understands that Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has been made Barcelona’s top target for 2023.
